Our Tradition

Christianity is an ancient faith, a messianic movement which grew out of the Israelite Scriptures and Second Temple Judaism, beginning with the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth in the early-first century A.D. and continuing with his apostles after him. In the nearly two thousand years since Jesus' ministry, countless men and women have contributed their voices to advance the faith. From the Great Tradition of Christianity have grown many distinct theological and denominational traditions. Given the antiquity and diversity of our faith, it is unwise for Christians to neglect entirely or uncritically accept our history. Rather, we ought to critically evaluate our history in light of Scripture and locate ourselves within the Great Tradition and the lesser traditions which belong to it. Every church and Christian belong to both. Therefore, it is simply a question of whether they are aware of their tradition or not. At Republic Baptist Assembly, we are aware of our traditions and celebrate them because we believe they most accurately capture the ancient faith.

Christian

We believe there is one true God who exists in three equal and eternal persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Son was incarnated as Jesus of Nazareth, the prophesied Messiah, without any mixture or dilution of either his deity or his humanity, Jesus was crucified and resurrected to forgive the sins of all who believe in him and will return to judge the wicked and resurrect the righteous by his grace to eternal life. Consequently, we affirm such foundational creedal formulations as the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed.

Protestant

We believe the ultimate and infallible authority for the church is Scripture alone, salvation is accomplished and mediated to humanity by Jesus alone, the entirety of salvation is a gift of God's grace alone, salvation is received by faith alone, and glory belongs and should be paid to God alone. These are known as the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation--Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Soli Deo Gloria--and are the theological foundation on which every Protestant tradition is built.

Baptist

We believe churches are comprised of members who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit to believe in Jesus, the priesthood belongs to all believers under the new covenant through the ministry of local churches, individuals are capable of knowing and relating to God without the need for a human intermediary, no human authority is permitted to coerce religious commitments because God alone possesses this authority so that individuals are free to believe as they choose, and churches are autonomous and governed by their regenerated, priestly, capable, and free members.

Evangelical

We believe Scripture is divinely inspired revelation so that it is infallible and authoritative in all matters it addresses, the universe is not merely natural but also supernatural and God interacts with it both through natural providence and supernatural miracles, these fundamental convictions must be held firmly without compromise, but isolationism and separatism should be avoided so that churches are capable of faithfully engaging popular culture and modern scholarship with wholistic gospel clarity.

Our Community

Community is a critical component of any church. How members interact and relate to one another defines discipleship and validates the gospel. We aim to bind ourselves together in love and unity. We have identified four community characteristics through which we love one another and by which we are united. These characteristics define our community.

We are a community which is captivated with Christ. Our shared faith in him binds us together and all our shared ministry is for the glory of his name.

We are a community which is submitted to Scripture. Our teaching exposits Scripture so we may conform our lives and church to biblical principles.

We are a community which is fostered by fellowship. Our relationships edify us through shared meals on Sundays and Wednesdays and life together.

We are a community which is motivated by ministry. Our mission is to build up the church and advance the kingdom by making and teaching disciples of Jesus.

Our Name

What happens when churches do not understand the meaning of their name? They lose a sense of identity, purpose, and direction. That is the problem we tried to avoid when naming Republic Baptist Assembly. The adjectives "Republic" and "Baptist" are largely self-explanatory. We are located in Republic and belong to the Baptist tradition. We could have added "Church" but instead chose the noun "Assembly" to anchor our name. This was not an attempt at eccentricity nor to associate us with the Assemblies of God. Rather, it was a deliberate attempt to communicate meaning to ourselves and to others. The word "church" has developed its own unique meaning, but there is no disputing that it is a poor translation of the Greek word ekklesia. It is probably a transliteration of a completely different Greek word which means "of the Lord". When the original audience heard ekklesia, they did not think about a specifically religious organization of believers nor a building for public worship. They thought about citizens of a Greek city-state gathered together to advance that city's interests. No English word substantially and satisfactorily captures the idea, but "assembly" is the best option. We are citizens of the kingdom of Christ gathered together every Sunday to advance that kingdom's interests. That is the heart of every church's identity, purpose, and direction and is why we are named Republic Baptist Assembly.
